ARTICLE BY VANILLA COBRA
All in all 2009 proved to be a very solid year for horror, contributing some of the more memorable titles of the decade. Now that the year and decade has come to an end, here is BWARE's TOP 10 Horror Films of 2009 as well as TOP 10 of the Decade. Undoubtedly, this is going to be scrutinized as well as debatable in almost every aspect, so if you don't like the list....START YOUR OWN WEBPAGE!
2009 IN REVIEW
1. Orphan
2. Trick R' Treat
3. Drag Me To Hell
4. Hills Run Red
5. My Bloody Valentine
6. Dead Girl
7. Book of the Dead
8. Last House on the Left
9. Voices
10. Friday the 13th
Lastly, I'd have to diss all the unwatchable tripe that studios never should have put money into....
"The Unborn" was another cliche, ballsless, PG-13 yawn. Saw VI felt like another 90 minute trailer to another sequel. 2012, not really horror but another tacky disaster movie brought to us by Rolan Emerich (Godzilla / Day After Tomorrow). Dario Argento came up short with Mother of Tear. Wrong Turn 3: Dead End, well, I think Dead End sums that one up. Pass on all this shit stained glass.
DECADE IN REVIEW
1. The Mist
2. 28 Days Later
3. American Psycho
4. Orphan
5. Halloween (Rob Zombie's remake)
6. Audition
7. Hostel
8. Dawn Of The Dead
9. House of 1000 Corpses
10. Trick R' Treat
In the decade dominated by remakes and torture porn mind benders, everyone should notice none of the "Saw" flicks made the cut.
Stephen King's The Mist came out of nowhere two years ago and has arguably the best ending in decades. Christian Bale's unforgettable portrayal of Patrick Bateman put American Psycho on alone. Rob Zombie, love him or hate him, pumped life into the genre more than anyone, in my opinion, by re-inventing Halloween and his TCM exploits.
Little known "Audition", from our Japanese comrads, created an unforgettable, surreal experience. Dawn of the Dead tops the rankss one of the best remakes ever made! Eli Roth shook things up with "Hostel" and "Cabin Fever". Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" will probably be remembered in the genre forever, despite the "Are they zombies or not" debate.
CLOSING REMARKS
Undoubtedly, I'll look back at these down the road and second guess as well as say, "What the hell was I smoking when I wrote in certain titles", but it seems like a good idea at this time. With any luck 2010 will keep up the pace of this decade unlike the 1990's that set Horror back...well a decade. I tried to filter out the crap and probably overlooked some of the good but there's always next year. Nerves rest easy gore fiends.
